Bandimere Speedway Anchors Entertainment At the Foot of the Rockies
In 1958, John Bandimere, Sr. purchased a parcel of land on the west side of Denver, along the Hogback at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. He and his family began the process of constructing a small but efficient drag strip that was to be used to augment their auto parts business. It also was the fulfillment of a dream of John Sr.’s to provide a safe environment for young people to learn about cars and race them off the streets.
Now, following the 50th anniversary in 2008, the only thing at Bandimere Speedway that has not changed is the facilities location. Nearly every original building has been replaced, including the original spark plug-replica timing tower and the event schedule has grown nearly 10 times its original size to host a variety of specialty events, including the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals. Already boosting Colorado’s economy by more than $18 million each year, new events are continually being added, and expected to draw more out-of-state fans and racers.
In addition to Bandimere Speedway’s weekend racing series programs, specialty events will include the season opening NAPA Auto Parts “Night of Fire & Thunder”, Big O Tires “Jet Car Nationals & Family Festival”, and Rich Christensen’s “Arm Drop Live!”. Other popular events include specialty events catering to the fan of any specific brand or style of automobile.
In preparation for the 2009 racing season, Bandimere Speedway completed several major track renovation projects. The second all-concrete surface on the NHRA Full Throttle Series tour was finish in last year, along with the installation over 12,000 feet of cooling lines, and 24,000 gallons of water storage to circulate under the first 160 feet of track surface. In 2009, a permanent chilling system will consistently cool this system that proved successful at the Mopar Mile-High Nationals in 2008. Additionally, a complete sand trap reconfiguration has been completed, including new grade sand, additional walls, larger catch nets, and fencing. New L.E.D. scoreboards will be in place this spring.
Bandimere Speedway is located four miles south of I-70 on C-470 at the Morrison Road exit. 24-hour information is available on the On-Track Performance Information Hotline at 303-697-4870 or our website at www.bandimere.com.
