MORE DETAILS:

The Cincinnati Waldorf School is an independent school that has been offering a classical Waldorf education in Cincinnati for forty years. Our curriculum promotes academic excellence, artistic expression, and critical thinking skills. Offering classes for infants through grade eight, the Cincinnati Waldorf School educates the whole child—head, heart and hands. Waldorf education consciously builds a strong foundation during the early childhood years for the later intellectual growth of the child, but avoids the actual teaching of academic subjects in Kindergarten. The purposeful activities provide the first steps in the evolution of the cognitive, social, and emotional processes that continue in the academic work of the elementary school. The Early Childhood faculty builds this foundation by filling the day with carefully crafted and artfully executed activities. Eurythmy (rhythmic movement), nature walks, and healthy outdoor play build physical strength, agility, and grace. Other purposeful activities include watercolor painting, drawing, handcrafts, beeswax modeling, and baking. Imaginative play, poems, stories, puppetry, music, and circle games all open the youngster to the wonders of creativity. An interdisciplinary, hands-on approach to learning is fundamental to Waldorf Grade Schools. For example, our second-graders may plant a vegetable garden on a local farm. In third grade, they harvest, prepare, cook and sell their products. In the process, they are introduced to the natural sciences, measurement, time and money. Academic studies come alive through such practical experiences. In all grades the children create their own illustrated books to demonstrate what they learn. These may be filled with the four mathematical processes, fables from a myriad of cultures, workings of clocks and calendars, poetry or diagrams. Students compose descriptions which are both poetic and scientifically accurate. The process of learning is always active and creative, consistently enhanced by art, music and body movement to engage the children’s entire being.
