2 Parents Love It!
How long have you been in business? 1.5 years
Tell us about your kids/ages: Henry is 5.5 and Kate has one month till she's 4 (she's a Christmas baby!)
Why did you decide to start your own business? I was hoping to support the family with a little income, and also was in need of a creative outlet. Otherwise I just continue to create more projects to do around the house, costing us money.
I was starting to feel very "stuck" in my role as a homemaker, and needed something that was more personally fulfilling in addition to my role of Mom.
What do you love most about your business?
I love the flexibility it allows me. I can start and stop on any project anytime. So when the kids need me, or are sick, or it's time to leave for school or a play date, I can drop what I'm doing, put my mom hat back on, and go.
I also love knowing that my art is being enjoyed and cherished by so many people. This time of year, so much of my work is being gifted to people they love, and that makes me smile ear to ear.
What's the hardest thing about being a mom and a business owner?
The hardest part is finding a balance. There are days where I am feeling particularly productive, and artistic, but my kids need me, and I need to choose to walk away from my work. There are other times I have tons of orders and need to get work done, but I'd so much prefer to be playing with my kids.
What advice would you give a mom thinking about starting her own business?
I advise talking with friends you know can be totally honest with you. Ask them if there really can be a market for your item or service? Is it worth what you need to charge to make a profit?
Also, I think it's really important to ask yourself, do you love it? Is it worth the time it will take you away from your family?
In my case, it works out to the perfect amount of time. I love spending time with my kids, but like every other mom, I need space and time to do something for me. This job I've created allows me do something I find calming, mentally challenging, and rewarding. All things that being a mother can lack.
I create custom mosaics complimentary to your space, from address signs to serving trays to picture frames and more. The possibilities are endless.
