Easy options for everyone to get involved

June 10, 2023

It's Pride Month and there's a kaleidoscope of color out there. Not sure how to celebrate or offer support? Don't overthink it, find something that floats your boat and jump in. We've got ideas that'll work for anyone, and isn't that the point after all?

1. Educate Yourself
Why is Pride Month such a big deal anyway? Learning about the history and importance is a huge step in supporting people of all stripes. Get yourself to the library or just go online. Resources are everywhere these days. Some of our fave books to learn more about the importance of Pride this month and every month are:

We Are Everywhere: Protest, Power, and Pride in the History of Queer Liberation - Matthew Reimer & Leighton Brown
Tomorrow Will Be Different - Sarah McBride
Stonewall: The Definitive Story of the LGBTQ Rights Uprising That Changed America - Martin Duberman
Untamed - Glennon Doyle
Memorial: A Novel - Bryan Washington
Gender Outlaw: On Men, Women and the Rest of Us - Kate Bornstein

2. Support LGBTQ-owned Businesses
Share the love by spending your hard-earned dollars at businesses that support and live their pride every single day. Find local businesses in your area using the Intentionalist Directory or QueerCos.com.

3. Watch and Learn
Grab the remote and support Pride Month while you're at it. We're lucky to have plenty of movies and shows that feature LGBTQ+ characters and storylines at our fingertips these days. Watching can help bring issues and experiences right to us, without leaving the couch. Some options in our FYP:

Losing Alice, Visible: Out on Television, Invasion - Apple TV
Pride: To Be Seen, Trevor: The Musical, Glee - Disney +
Drag Me to Dinner, Fire Island, Schitt's Creek - Hulu
We're Here, Euphoria, I am Jazz - Max
Heartstopper, Queer Eye, Orange is the New Black - Netflix

Yellowjackets, Uncouple, RuPaul's Drag Race - Paramount Plus

4. Donate or Volunteer
Use your resources to help organizations that support LGBTQ+ people and causes. With tons of options to choose from, there's surely a group that will champion your specific ideals. Whether it's a national group like these or a local organization in your own community. Giving always helps.

5. Attend a Pride Event
One of the most fun ways to celebrate Pride? Attend a local event such as a parade or festival. Most are family-friendly, joy-filled celebrations that are open to all. Bring your rainbows and your open mind and be prepared to celebrate love in all its forms. But remember these events serve a larger purpose and your presence is to support those who face extra challenges living their daily lives. If you're a member of the LGBTQ+ community, enjoy these events to express your true self safely and without reservation. If you're an ally, remember to let them.
