MORE DETAILS:

Gladys Ave Urban Farm is a small scale intensive farm located on Gladys Ave, just north of Anaheim Street, in Long Beach, CA. Owned and operated by Captain Charles Moore, the farm provides the community with:

1) Fresh local produce that eliminates packaging and long distance transportation,
2) Organic food produced using proven intensive agricultural methods to maximize yields and eliminate agricultural practices dangerous to health, and
3) The opportunity to learn and work in the dirt and connect with mother earth.

Originally a marble storage site for a counter-top fabrication company, Charles Moore purchased the site in 1985 to use the building as part of a furniture repair business. Clearing the marble slabs from the adjacent land, Charles embarked on an urban agriculture project called "The Company Garden." He built a 1,000-gallon cinder block cistern to collect rainwater, still fully functional. The first mixed greens and packaged salads were sold to Papa John's Natural Foods in Belmont Shore. Charles then founded Long Beach Organic in 1994, and the organization used the property as a demonstration garden and native plant nursery until 2009 when it transitioned to a focus on community gardens, and is no longer using the site. In 2010, Charles founded Gladys Ave Urban Farm, and following a year of rehabilitation and soil preparation, the farm is now in full production.
