Singing and dancing with your little ones is fun, and it’s incredibly beneficial to their development. It turns out that music also plays a huge role in deepening personal connections. (It is actually science! In fact studies have found that singing and making music together acts as a "powerful social glue.")
Below are a few ways that music and babies go hand in hand:
1. MUSIC WAS THERE, ALL ALONG
You’ve probably already been bonding over music, and it's important to continue this special connection. Did you ever sing or play music to your baby bump?
Good news, there’s a good chance your babe actually remembers it! Sounds experienced a few months before birth may actually be remembered by infants. Keep those tunes jamming!
2. BABIES ARE WIRED TO RECEIVE MUSIC
Research has shown that infants respond to tempo changes, can discriminate among differences in loudness and melody, and can sense when a song is ending. Babies are made to respond to music and we naturally break out sing-song melodies to engage with them. Amazing!
3. MUSIC LEARNING SUPPORTS ALL LEARNING
From language, to listening, to rhythm and rhyme, kids learn a LOT through music. Studies also show that singing and dancing together with your kiddo leads to increased empathy and encourages a sense of community — for you both!
Enrolling in an early education music program, like Music Together, helps develop our innate musicality and supports a child’s social and emotional growth. See how bonding with your kiddo is easy, and fun!
4. SINGING SOOTHES
Soft, simple songs can calm or distract during times of distress. Cooing and sweet lullabies quell an oncoming meltdown. Mom Tip: singing the same songs during times of transition (like bedtime or the dreaded toy clean-up) creates predictable cues.
So, set your singing voice free and dance those sillies out! Your kids will thank you for years to come!
