Hulafrog Mom: Jessica Vasquez, Hulafrog San Diego North, CA
Kid’s Ages: 2 years old
Class Format: On Zoom
Outtakes: “My son and I finally have a small amount of time each week where it’s just the two of us spending quality time together.”
THE PRE-CLASS EXPERIENCE:
I admittedly wasn’t sure how my son was going to react to virtual classes with Music Together as we had taken other Mommy and Me music classes in the past and he was pretty shy. I was comforted, however, by emails from the instructor beforehand that the focus of the class should mostly be on listening and moving rather than “appearing” on the screen or remaining in the camera’s view. I was assured that if I as the parent participated and encouraged my son to do the same, he would come around.
HOW WE PREPARED FOR CLASS AT HOME:
To prepare our space for class, I tried to remove toys that weren’t music related and made sure we were both wearing comfy clothes to move around in. The instructor gave some great suggestions for everyday items around the house to use for certain songs (wooden spoons for drumsticks or dish rags for scarves to wave around).
THE CLASS EXPERIENCE:
Once class started, my son loved using wooden spoons as drumsticks and did enjoy moving from instrument to instrument. He would catch himself on the screen from time to time, but would then shift to another instrument or dance.
AN AT-HOME PERK:
One of the biggest perks of a virtual class was that we were able to start potty training and not have to worry about skipping a class or two because it’s hard to get out of the house for those first few weeks. We had the potty handy during class and he could participate without missing a beat (literally).
WHAT WE LOVE ABOUT MUSIC TOGETHER:
The best part of our classes was that my son and I finally have a small amount of time each week where it’s just the two of us spending quality time together. Before the pandemic, my oldest child was in school every day, so my son and I had bonding time. With my oldest now doing virtual school and having limited options for in-person classes, these Music Together classes have allowed us to connect again.
MY SON ENJOYING HIS MUSIC TOGETHER CLASS ON Zoom:
MY FAVORITE MOMENT DURING CLASSES:
My favorite memory from our classes was seeing my son get excited about using our wooden spoons as drumsticks (as opposed to his actual drumsticks)--just because he was getting to "play" with something he usually doesn't get to use. He was super jazzed about it.
I WANT MUSIC INFLUENCE TO START NOW:
At his age, I know my son probably isn't going to memorize song lyrics or learn how to play an instrument, but I definitely understand how music classes can impact a basic understanding of what music is and can be, and that music makes things more fun and exciting. From listening to the songs he hums to himself, the ones that get his toes tapping, or the music he asks to listen to, I can see the influence music class has had on him.
I WOULD RECOMMEND THESE CLASSES TO A FRIEND:
Music Together classes offer a great opportunity to have some close, one-on-one time to spend with your child. The virtual options allow you and your child to participate from the safety of your own home. The pace and structure of the classes are great for small children.
OVERALL, SUCH A SUCCESS:
We loved our Music Together classes. The class materials--the song book and CD--are high quality, and I know we'll get use and enjoyment out of them long after our virtual classes are over. Our instructor had a great energy and she was always happy and excited to "see" her students in class. My son is 2 years old, and he doesn't usually sing along with the words, but he loved dancing or using his drums to keep time with the music. I absolutely would enroll in another session for the music education AND the one-on-one time I got to spend with him each week during his music class.
