THE RESULTS ARE IN
This month, Hulafrog conducted its second MOMS@WORK survey, updating the original 2013 study that appeared in The New York Times, The Huffington Post, USA Today and elsewhere.
The first survey was eye-opening, uncovering the significant gap between what moms would like to be doing in their careers versus what they are actually doing today. The new survey underscores just how wide that gap still is and how, in some cases, concerns are deepening.
Women want to put their family first, and also have a rewarding work life. Some now, some later. But they are universally more worried today that prioritizing kids means sacrificing career.
WHAT ARE WE MISSING?
66% of stay-at-home moms said they would have continued working if only their employer allowed them to work from home. 83% of them intend to go back to work, but 59% believe the hours will be an obstacle.
What is our country's workforce missing when so many educated and experienced women (and men) are sitting on the sidelines because there are too few family-friendly options?
And once we lose them, because the barriers to re-entry are so great, we often don’t get them back. Huge loss.
WIN-WIN
54% of moms said they would be willing to take less pay in exchange for a more flexible schedule. Many commented about the importance of such arrangements making good sense for the business in order to be sustainable.
Those companies that are figuring out how to offer working from home (even just sometimes), flexible schedules (even in exchange for less pay), and other win-win accommodations for parent employees, could keep many moms from “opting out” in the future. And retain the hard-earned staff they've invested in at the same time. Currently, 22% of moms working full-time are able to work from home at least one day per week.
ABOUT THE SURVEY
The survey was conducted online between July 20, 2016 and August 17, 2016.
Survey respondents included 3,182 women in the U.S. with at least one child under the age of 18 living at home.
