'Tis the season to improve river habitats!
Recycle your Christmas tree and help improve our rivers! In partnership with Trout Unlimited Rhode Island Chapter, we're collecting trees for upcoming projects to restore river habitats by reducing erosion and creating refuge habitat for fish , turtles , and other aquatic organisms.
This process is called Conifer Revetment and it helps restore rivers that have become wide and shallow due to flooding and storms. Strategically placing the trees along the river edge narrows the stream and slows the flow of water, trapping sediment and stabilizing the bank.
Christmas trees may be dropped off between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., on Saturday, January 2nd and Saturday, January 9th at DEM Division of Fish & Wildlife's Arcadia Check Station in Exeter.
*(No synthetic trees, trees with tinsel/other synthetic materials still attached, or trees sprayed with fire retardant chemicals.)
