Working from home while raising a family is a serious juggling act. [Understatement.] Fortunately, our awesome Managing Editors have been-there, done-that. Many times over. We polled 16 of them and asked for their best ideas about how to make life better when it comes to working from home.
I put everything -- work calls, school meetings, blocks of project time, errands, you-name-it -- on my calendar. It helps to check it the night before so I can plan my day (and get some sleep). Calendar apps are so easy to use these days and synch between your computer and phone.
Cristin Krokosz, Hulafrog National, & mom of four
I'm definitely a list person and my To Do list helps me focus on what needs to get done. Plus, it's super gratifying to cross things off! Have a clear (and realistic) list of tasks each day so you take it seriously, and a companion list with longer-term goals if you need it.
Jennifer Fedorchak, Hulafrog Cape May County, NJ, & mom of two
I am the queen of plowing through must-do tasks in planned chunks of time! Don't do anything else until a task is done and then move on. I think this is so key to master, especially when we have kids and family tasks to juggle.
Evie Estes, Hulafrog Cincinnati Eastside, OH, & mom of three
I take a short break after each major task. A coffee break or a quick call to my BFF won't derail me and it rewards me for completing my task! It's a small incentive to get things done and smart way to transition to a new to-do.
Debbie Bates, Hulafrog South Windsor, CT, & mom of two
I set the microwave timer before I dive into a new project, big or small. (Egg timer. iPhone timer. You pick.) I know I can get caught up in my work, and the timer helps me focus and stay on track with my task at hand.
Kim Zlatin, Hulafrog Chicago North Shore Editor, & mom of two
Step away from your inbox! Seriously, whatever you do, don’t check your email first thing in the morning. You'll end up getting sidetracked and responding to others instead of focusing on your top priorities. Same for social media. If you have to use it, schedule a time to check it later in your day.
Amy Haggard, Hulafrog Ridgewood-Paramus, NJ, & mom of two
Make a to-do list, then prioritize! I always get the most important task done first. Even if my list is 10 items long, #1 has to get done before moving on to anything else.
Deb Perrault, Hulafrog Leominster-Lancaster, MA, & mom of four
Block out 2-3 times later in the day to check your email. That's enough to read, respond and organize messages. It keeps me out of the email black hole!
Leslie Len Meis, Hulafrog Pasadena, CA, & mom of two
It's email karma. For every email you send, you'll get two back. ;) Prevent inbox overload (for others and yourself) by being mindful of how you address your emails. I address messages to the person I need a reply from and then CC and BCC where appropriate.
Bonnie Roalsen, Hulafrog Wellesley-Framinham, MA, & mom of two
I start my day with a few minutes of calmness. I review my To Do list with a cup of coffee, think about what I want accomplish and set the tone for the day. It's very centering and helps me be productive.
Alyson Denzler, Hulafrog NY Metro Area, & mom of two
A dedicated work space helps create boundaries between your work time and family time. I only work in my home office. And I love, love this 2-minute video about laptop ergonomics for the whole family - no hunching, people!
Kerri McCorkill, Hulafrog Mansfield-Attleboro, MA, & mom of three
If I can't find time in the day to workout, I stress! I have weights and resistance bands in my home office and between tasks, I get in a few pushups, crunches, or arm curls. Makes me feel better! So walk, climb the stairs, run in place. Just get moving during your breaks.
Linda Escobar, Hulafrog Bergen County South, NJ, & mom of three
I am a snacker. So having healthy options on hand is key. I stock up on hard boiled eggs, trail mix and lots of fruit and veggies at the beginning of the week.
JoAnna Ahn, Hulafrog San Jose, CA, & mom of three
A shared calendar with your spouse is a must-have to keep tabs on the fam's events. And it's really great when you have older kids with their own phones. Now we can all see what school, family, sports and work activities we have and keep track of each other.
Carolyn Farwell, Hulafrog Aberdeen-Bel Air, MD, & mom of two
My fridge has the next 3 months posted at all times. It's a great visual for the whole family and allows to us to add/change things at the last minute. Tip: Google "printable calendars." There are a ton of customizable options online for free.
Michelle Martinez, Hulafrog Southwest Valley, UT, & mom of three
Need an assistant? Since I'm home with the kids and working, I keep them involved by bringing them to events and letting them hand out cards about Hulafrog. It's a great way to show them how work can be empowering and fun!
Tia Quinn, Hulafrog Plymouth-Middleborough, MA, & mom of two
